NORTH AFRICA
North Africa is primarily desert, although there are spectacular beaches along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. This region is predominately Muslim and very conservative. The cities will reflect its Arab history. This is the place to see mosques, bargain at souks, visit the market squares of each city, and drink in the exotic flavor of this region. Many well preserved Roman ruins still exist outside the cities. Take the time to schedule a desert adventure. Take a camel ride or visit some of the more rural areas.

WEST AFRICA
West Africa has a slow rhythm to its day. The people are friendly, inclusive, and love music. Festivals abound in this region with lots of drum music. West African drums are known throughout the world. Try shopping for a Djembe drum. Christianity is the predominant religion in coastal areas; Islam is predominant in the interior areas. Indigenous tribes are scattered throughout the region. West Africa geography is an interesting transition from Sahara desert to savannah to tropical forest. The rainforests in this region are not as highly developed as Central Africa although they are quite pristine. West Africa has a history of involvement in the Atlantic slave trade and opportunities exist to learn about this history.

EAST AFRICA
East Africa has been shaped by the Great Rift Valley and is considered stunning. The Rift Valley was formed as several tectonic plates join, creating spectacular features in this region. All of Africa’s great lakes are found between the East and Western Rift including Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Albert, and Lake Edward. Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, the two tallest mountains in Africa, are found in East Africa. East Africa has a variety of exciting adventure opportunities. Try a safari to see elephants, lions, and rhinoceros, go gorilla trekking, visit stunning waterfalls, or lounge on dazzling white beaches.

CENTRAL AFRICA
Central Africa, sometimes named Middle Africa, is a bordered by the Sahara Desert to the North and the Great Rift Valley to the east. Primarily this region is dominated by the Congo River. The Congo River and its tributaries collectively form the second largest river system in the world, after the Amazon basin. This region is dominated by tropical rain forest. Some countries contain unspoiled white sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. The National Parks in this region display impressive mountains, waterfalls, and rainforest wildlife.
