Central Africa, sometimes named Middle Africa, is a bordered by the Sahara Desert to the North and the Great Rift Valley to the east. Primarily this region is dominated by the Congo River. The Congo River and its tributaries collectively form the second largest river system in the world, after the Amazon basin. This region is dominated by tropical rain forest. Some countries contain unspoiled white sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. The National Parks in this region display impressive mountains, waterfalls, and rainforest wildlife.

ANGOLA
Angola is rebuilding after decades of civil war. Few people speak English, so be prepared to speak Portuguese. Luanda is the capital city. Outside the city visit the Kissama National Park and see a variety of wildlife including exotic birdlife, ostriches, antelope, gazelles, and giraffes. Slavery in Angola is an ancient institution that predates the Portuguese conquest. Visit the Museum of Slavery to gain insights into this period. The Calandula Waterfalls are an impressive site, particularly during the rainy season.


BURUNDI
Burundi has not yet developed its tourism industry. Services are very primitive. Burundi has the the lowest GDP per capita and is considered the poorest country in the world. The capital is Bujumbura, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Please carefully review all government advisories when planning a trip to Burundi.


CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
Central African Republic is experiencing continuing rebel activity. Travel is not recommended.


GABON
Gabon is one of the least densely populated African countries however its oil wealth has propelled it to one of the richest countries in Africa. Oil wealth has enabled the conservation of the lush tropical rainforests. Visitors should spend time on the sparkling white sandy beaches and viewing a wide variety of wildlife including gorillas, panthers, parrots, and elephants.


RWANDA
Rwanda is very poor and most people exist on subsistence agriculture. Tourism has been gradually increasing due to the immense natural beauty and friendly nature of the Rwandese. Rwanda has made a remarkable recovery from its previous genocide. When in Kigali make sure to visit the Genocide Museum which chronicles the 100 day massacre. Rwanda is a very conservative society. Dress conservatively and be aware of local customs before arriving. The Army provides security in Volcano National Park to protect visitors and the mountain gorillas. Arrange a trek to see mountain gorillas. Visit Nyungwe National Park for primate tours, birding, and viewing the marvelous waterfalls.


ZAMBIA
Zambia was formerly a British colony and English an official language of the country. Zambia is the ideal location for nature lovers and thrill seekers. Livingstone is the center of adventure sports, including bungee jumping, white water rafting, and micro glider flights. Not far from Livingstone is Victoria Falls, a UNESCO world heritage site. National parks abound in Zambia including the Kafue National Park, Kasanka National Park, Sumbu National Park, South Luangwa National Park, North Luangwa National Park, Lower Zambezi National Park, and many others. When in Lusaka visit the Soweto Market, the Kabwata Cultural Village, and the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
