South America is a region noted for its wild terrain, but it is so much more. The
Inca civilization developed in South America, and many notable ruins still exist. South
America is home to the Andes Mountains, the Amazon rainforests, beautiful beaches along
the Caribbean, Atlantic, and Pacific coats, and a heavy Spanish and Portuguese influence.
Indigenous cultures still are prevalent throughout the continent. Outdoor adventures
abound throughout this vast continent and range from skiing, surfing, and ecotourism.
Countries in South America include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia,
French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Argentina is the eighth
largest country in the world, and the second largest in South America. Since Argentina is
located in the Southern Hemisphere the seasons may seem reversed. Wintertime is considered
June, July, and August. There are several regions in this large country. Argentina is
renowned for world class beef, wine, spectacular scenery, and excellent shopping, particularly
leather goods.
Visit Buenos Aires, the capital, to partake of the many excellent
restaurants. Watch out, lunch is the largest meal of the day and dinner begins quite late.
Take a river cruise and watch the local Tango Dancers dance on the street.
Visit Cordoba, a city build by the Jesuits in the 17th and 18th century. Places to visit
include Iglesia Sagrado Corazón, Compañía de Jesús,
Palacio Ferreyra, and Ex Rectorado de la Universidad Nacional de
Córdoba. There are many interesting museums in Cordoba covering many varied subjects.
Museums to visit include Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes, Centro de
Arte Contemporáneo Chateau Carreras, Museo Paleontológico de la Universität
Nacional de Córdoba, and Museo Histórico Marqués de Sobremont.
The two most popular destinations are the region of Patagonia, and
Iguaçu Falls.
Patagonia is a region located in including the Andes Mountains. Outdoor
adventures are widely available in the area. Outdoor adventures include, kayaking, rafting,
rock climbing, skiing, and many others. Visit the Nahuel Huapi National Park
, and the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Iguaçu Falls is located on the border of Brazil and Argentina. The area is
a UNESCO World Heritage site. The falls are shared by Iguaçu National Park
(Brazil) and Iguazú National Park (Argentina). Iguaçu Falls is twice as wide
as Niagara Falls and offers better views. At one location the visitor can be surrounded with
260 degrees of waterfalls.
Bolivia is the poorest
country in South America yet is very distinctive in several ways. Boliva was the source of
most of the Spanish Empire's silver. Visit the working silver mines in Potosí.
Unfortunately, conditions today are not much different than in yesteryear. Visit the world's
largest salt flats at Salar de Uyuni.
In La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, visit the local markets.
There are several interesting museums including the Museum of Precious Metals,
the Coca Museum, the Museum San Francisco, and the
Musical Instrument Museum. La Paz is very high in altitude. It is not
uncommon to develop altitude sickness, so have adequate travel insurance.
Chile is located in South America
along the Pacific Coast. It is a long, narrow country sandwiched between the Andes Mountains
and the Pacific Ocean. Chile is a very interesting country with a variety of landscapes
including over 600 volcanoes, many still active, lakes, forests, and deserts. The coastline
is rugged, with impressive surfing waves, although the water is quite frigid. Visit the many
beautiful beaches for sunning or surfing. Beaches include Reñaca,
Curiñanco, Colún, Pichilemu, and many others.
If you are feeling very adventurous visit the Southern Chile city of Punta Arenas.
You can see a local penguin colony prior to boarding a trip to the Antarctic.
In Northern Chile visit the city of San Pedro de Atacama which is becoming a very
popular tourist destination. In the city you can visit the R. P. Gustavo Le Paige
Archaeological Museum to see mummies, and learn about pre-Colombian culture. Other
activities in the area include seeing the active Lascar Volcano, El
Tatio geyser field, Puritama Hot Springs, Death Valley,
Valley of the Moon, and even try sandsurfing. This city is quite high, so
beware of altitude sickness.
Peru contains has world class
ruin of the Incas, and many other old civilizations. The landscape of Peru is quite varied
including deserts, the Andes Mountains, and the tropical rainforests of the Amazon Basin. Most
people speak Spanish, although quite a few speak one of several native languages. In the
capital of Lima see the Spanish colonial buildings. Also visit the main
square called the Plaza de Armas, the Church of San Francisco,
the Archbishop's Palace, and the Lima Cathedral.
The second largest city in Peru is Arequipa whose historic centre of
the city is a UNESCO world heritage site. The city is primarily constructed of a white
volcanic rock thereby earning the city the nickname, 'the White City'. Make sure to walk
around the city, view the Spanish Colonial architecture. Also visit the Santa
Catalina Monastery, Goyeneche Palace, and the Casa del
Moral.
No trip to Peru is complete without visiting the city of Cusco, and the
nearby ruins of Macchu Picchu. Cusco was the capital of the Incas, and still
retains its traditional feeling. Many people still wear traditional clothes throughout the
city. Many Inca ruins are available to view from the city, notably Macchu Picchu. Macchu
Picchu is the most visited attraction in Peru. Other nearby ruins include Sacsayhuaman
, Ollantaytambo, and Inca Wasi.
Venezuela has the longest
Caribbean coastline of any country; it also has beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. Caracas
, the capital, has been called a concrete jungle. In Caracas visit the Museo Bolivariano
, Museo de Arte Colonial, and the changing of the guard at Panteón Nacional.
The world's highest waterfalls, Angel Falls are located in Canaima
National Park. The park is isolated; the only way to get there is by air. However, due
to its remoteness many of types of wildlife can be seen. The park boasts several hundred different
types of orchids.
