South Asia is one of the most richly rewarding regions of the world to visit. South Asia
consists of four or five countries, depending on the perspective of the reader: India, Pakistan,
Sri Lanka, Nepal, and last but not least Bhutan. Its scenery is amongst the most varied and
exciting anywhere, its history and culture are just not packaged and brought out on show for
the tourist, but lived. Allow a lot of time if you are planning to travel the region.

In New Delhi, you'll see the
remnants of the former colonial power. Wide streets, big squares, spacious parks and
ornamental government buildings form the landscape. New Delhi is where you can visit Gandhi's
memorial. Old Delhi is quite the opposite. It makes you think you've ended up in a
beehive of small narrow alleys, little shops, and a bustling daily life.
Sights worth visiting in Delhi: Lotus Temple, Bahai Temple, Safdarjang Tomb, Red Fort
(Lal Quila), Ghandi Museum and India Gate.
Mumbai (Earlier known by
Bombay), the cosmopolitan capital of Maharashtra, is located in the west of India. Because
of the mark the British left on the city, and its location, it changed from an isolated
town into a major commercial city. Recently, the government changed the city's former
Anglicized name Bombay, into Mumbai. Mumbai still is a must for travelers and is, to a
certain extent, a match for cities such as Paris and London.
Sights worth visiting in Mumbai: Mahalakshmi Temple, Gateway of India, Elephanta Caves,
Sanjay Ghandi National Park, Haji Ali and The Mumbai Municipal Corporation Building.

There was nothing much at
Karachi until the Mirs of Talpur seized it from the Khan of Kalat in 1795 and constructed
a mud fort at Manora. Under its protection, a small town grew up whose population had
reached 13,000 by 1818. Not much happened thereafter until February 1st, 1839, when a
British ship, The Wellesley - anchored off Manora. Two days later the small fort
surrendered without a shot being fired on either side. This single action shoved the
sleepy back-water towards becoming a world city.
Sights worth visiting in Karachi: Town Hall (Liaqat Hall), Wazier Mansion, and
Mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam.
This busy metropolis
has some of Pakistan's best sites. Lahore has been the capital of the Mughal Empire and
of the Sikhs. Lahore is located near the only border crossing with India that is
currently open, in the Pakistani part of the Punjab. While you will see many Sikhs
on the Indian side of the border, here the people are almost all Muslim. Lahore is
regarded as the heart of Pakistan and also the heart and mind of The Punjab. It is
the educational and cultural capital of Pakistan, only two and half hours away from
Harrapa the oldest civilized city of the world.
Sights worth visiting in Lahore: Wazir Khan Mosque, Badshahi Mosque, and Lahore Fort.
is the teardrop that falls from
the southern tip of India and is becoming increasingly popular as a travel destination
– and not only for sports fanatics who want to play a proper game of cricket. About
twenty million people reside on this relatively small island that used to bear the
name Ceylon. Although a lot of people come over to Sri Lanka to have a nice beach
holiday (finished off with a touch of culture), there is definitely more to see and
to do than sunbathing on one of the many excellent beaches.
Colombo is the place
where Sri Lanka's hustle and bustle takes place. Although it is the biggest city in Sri
Lanka, this is a commercial place where you can see some of the tallest buildings in Asia.
In the northern part of the city is the fort area, where you can find the British fort,
dating from the 19th century, and other remnants of the former colonial power.
Sights worth visiting in Columbo: The Colombo National Museum, The Bandaranaike
Museum, Galle Face at Sundown for a spectacular view.
The Himalaya Kingdom of Nepal is a great destination. With its stunning mountain views,
including the worlds highest peak Mount Everest, its ancient culture with many fine
examples of Buddhist art and architecture and its great outdoor activities such as
hiking and white water rafting. Nepal is a dream come true.
In Kathmandu itself
there are many sights and the countryside around it is stunning. Wherever you look,
there's always something of interest: a small ancient temple, a small statue, or a
Tibetan monk spinning his prayer wheel. The highest concentration of attractions is
within the area of Durbar Square. Just off the square is Freak Street which is well
past its prime but still has a bit of the flavor it had when it was a hangout for
Western hippies during the '60s and '70s.
Sights worth visiting in Kathmandu: Kumari Bahal (temple of the Living Goddess),
Taleju Temple, and Pasupathinath Temple.
Nestling in the Himalayas, the kingdom of Bhutan is bordered by China in the north
and India in the south. It is roughly the size of Switzerland. With its closely
guarded culture and traditions, and well-conserved pristine natural environment,
Bhutan is unique and fascinating in many ways.
Bhutan's capital city.
The population of Thimphu is estimated to be about 60,000 (2004). It is located in the
west-central part of Bhutan. Thimphu is modern in age only: new buildings are still based
on traditional designs with elaborately painted trefoil-shaped windows and nail less
wooden frames.
Sights worth visiting in Thimphu: Memorial Chorten, Royal Academy of Performing Arts,
and Changgankha Monastery.
